Cookie policy
The short version
We set two cookies, both strictly necessary, and nothing else. No advertising cookies, no analytics cookies, no cross-site tracking, no third-party tags.
That is why the banner on this site has no options to accept or reject. There is nothing non-essential to consent to.
What a cookie is
A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to store, which the browser sends back on your next visit. Some are needed for a site to work at all; others exist to follow you around. Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) we must have your consent before setting any that are not strictly necessary.
The cookies we set
Cookie preference
- What it does: remembers that you have seen and dismissed the cookie notice, so it does not reappear on every page.
- Set when: you dismiss the notice.
- How long it lasts: [TO CONFIRM: the exact lifetime of the stored cookie preference.]
- Why it is strictly necessary: without it we could not honour your choice, and would have to ask again on every page.
Administrator session
- What it does: keeps a signed-in administrator authenticated in the private admin area.
- Set when: an administrator signs in. It is never set for ordinary visitors to the public site.
- How long it lasts: for the length of the session, and it is cleared on sign-out.
- Why it is strictly necessary: it is what keeps the admin area private.
What we deliberately do not do
- We do not set advertising or retargeting cookies.
- We do not use Google Analytics or any similar third-party analytics script.
- We do not embed social media tracking pixels.
- We do not share anything with data brokers.
How we measure traffic instead
We do count page views, because we want to know which pages are useful — but we do it without a cookie. Each view is recorded with the page address, the referring site, a coarse device type, and a session identifier produced by a one-way hash that changes every day. It cannot be reversed, and because it changes daily it cannot link your visits from one day to the next.
Because this does not store anything on your device and does not identify you, it does not require consent under PECR.
Cookies set by others
Pages on this site may embed content from third parties — for example a booking page or an embedded video. Where that happens, the third party may set its own cookies, which are governed by their policy rather than ours.
Controlling cookies yourself
You can delete or block cookies through your browser's settings. If you block the two above, the cookie notice will reappear on every page and it will not be possible to sign in to the admin area. Nothing else about the public site will stop working.
